NY State Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder – ( NCRCSASD) workshop 

Anxiety disorders are common among children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with prevalence rates ranging between 11 to 84 percent. Recent evidence has demonstrated the efficacy of a modified cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach for children and adolescents with ASD and anxiety. This presentation will address what anxiety looks like in youth with ASD as well as introduce the cognitive behavioral intervention model for the treatment of anxiety in ASD. This presentation will focus on the tools and strategies practitioners and families can implement to reduce anxiety and increase self-regulation and coping skills in their children and teens.
Learning Objectives:
To understand what constitutes anxiety and the range of internalizing and externalizing presentations of anxiety in children and adolescents with ASD
To learn about the types of anxiety disorders seen in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, including the prevalence of specific anxiety disorders within ASD
To increase knowledge around the cognitive behavioral therapy framework for treating anxiety disorders within ASD, including learning specific strategies to build coping skills
