Stop Special Education Standard Cuts

Take Action!

Take Action! We have learned from Albany insiders that we need to put pressure now on State Senator John Flanagan, Chair of the New York State Senate Education Committee to stop Governor Cuomo’s budget proposal that would allow school districts to seek broad waivers from laws and regulations that provide important protections for students with disabilities.

For example, these waivers could allow school districts to avoid requirements regarding class size, behavior intervention plans, and notification of certain changes in placement. This broad waiver provision would erode students’ and parents’ rights and the quality of education for students with disabilities. While the Assembly budget bill rejects the special education waiver, the Senate budget bill includes it. Currently, Governor Cuomo, the Assembly, and the Senate are negotiating the final 2015-2016 budget. We want to ensure that the final budget does not include the special education waiver. Families of special needs students pay the highest property taxes in the US like everybody else in New York, but Governor Cuomo wants to provide our children with only the bare federal minimum standards. This is unacceptable.

First click on the Take Action Link to send messages to Governor Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, Senate Coalition Co-Leader Jeffrey Klein, Senator John Flanagan Chair of the Senate Education Committee, and your State Senator and your member of the Assembly letting them know that the Governor’s budget is unacceptable. And please call the offices of the following elected officials and let them know that Governor Cuomo’s plan to allow the lowest standards for special education allowed by the federal law is completely unacceptable. Especially when New York families pay the highest taxes in the US.
