Upstate NY Autism Awareness (UNYAA) has partnered with Sports Are For Everyone (SAFE) and most recently the Glens Falls YMCA to provide adaptive sporting leagues to those with autism and other developmental and physical disabilities. The leagues began in the Spring of 2009 with our first baseball league. Twenty-two children aged 5 to 14 came to Crandall Park on Sunday mornings to learn basic baseball techniques and what it meant to be a part of a team. The league was a huge success culminating in a special game, picnic, and trophy ceremony for all the children and their families.
In the fall of 2009, our collaborations continued with twenty children playing soccer in Crandall Park. The soccer league also began a new partnership with local high school athletes helping to mentor these special children as they learned to kick, run and score goals.
In January of 2010, a new venture and partnership with the Glens Falls YMCA was born as 25 children with special needs and their families took to the courts in the gym in the first adaptive basketball league in our area. UNYAA is so pleased to be able to provide these opportunities to these very special children and their families.
